Great British Sewing Bee | Episode 5

Well they weren’t kidding when they said it was ‘tricky fabric’ week, were they?! The five remaining contestants tackled lace, leather and neoprene, yikes!

Highlights for us this week included Deborah’s gorgeous teal lace pencil skirt but she wasn’t the winner of that particular challenge – Matt took the top spot and won praise for his seams and invisible zip. Paul and Neil didn’t fair so well and got pulled up for uneven hems and excessive lining respectively.

The transformation challenge this week was a real corker – the contestants waited with baited breath as Patrick unveiled a wetsuit!! There was much joking from Claudia about Kylie (Neil’s dress); Ga Ga and Madonna as the contestants lined up their mannequins for judging. It would be fair to say that they all struggled slightly with this one but the girls came out on top. Deborah made a great looking dress by combining the neoprene with a bright, aztec print, and Lorna added a 3 dimensional peplum and augmented breast inserts which were reminiscent of Thierry Mugler designs.

The last tricky fabric they had to tackle was leather. Dressmakers know that leather requires careful handling: it can’t be pressed so seams need to be beaten or rolled flat; and it can’t be tacked or pinned without leaving holes. The victors of this challenge were Neil, who got a special mention for the clever collar detail of his jacket, and Lorna who chose a particularly on trend olive green colour leather for her jacket.

We love leather and we’ve got a large range of patterns for leather jackets here, including this gorgeous leather top for you to try.

Neil took garment of the week for his leather jacket which will no doubt mark a return to form for him. Then came the sad bit and we had to say ‘sew long’ to two contestants: Deborah (sniff) and Paul (sob). Good luck guys, we’ll miss you!
