So it’s week two of The Great British Sewing Bee, and the search for Britain’s best amateur sewer continues! In the second episode, the sewers take on patterned fabric and are challenged to make a pair of men’s pyjamas.

The pattern challenge this week was to create a skirt with box pleats at the front and back, and a hand-sewn lapped zip at the side seam. They were given 3 hours to make the skirt and had to use patterned fabric, ensuring that it aligned correctly across the pleats and matched the top waistband, which some of the sewers struggled with. Tamara and Cerina matched their patterned fabrics well, but Heather won the first challenge once again as her garment was executed brilliantly.

For the second challenge, the sewers were asked to use two men’s shirts to create something with contrasting patterned fabrics. Lynda and Cerina chose to make children’s dresses; Jenni, David and Tamara made skirts; and Heather, Julie and Simon created women’ shirts. May was shocked by the variety of designs! Chinelo made a fitted ladies’ top with a beautiful bow shoulder detail, which came second, but Tamara won the alteration challenge for a second time with her creative combination of fabrics.

The final challenge was to create a pair of men’s pyjamas using their choice of pattern. Most of the sewers opted to make traditional style pyjamas with a collar and trousers, although their fabric choices made the finished garments look very different! A few of the sewers added piping to their shirt tops for a professional finish as well. Lynda won Garment Of The Week with her striped pyjamas – Patrick loved them so much that he just had to try the shirt on! Simon was the unlucky sewer to leave the competition this week.
